Lake Brates, the largest natural meadow lake is an important fishing base and one of the tourist attractions of Galati.

Its location at the confluence of the Prut and the Danube helps maintain three types of natural habitats: continental freshwater (stagnant and flowing), extensive cereal crops (including rotating weeds) and deciduous forests (mixture of native white willow with white poplar and black poplar).

In 2011, Lake Brates was declared a special protection area for avian fauna. whistling, small duck, large duck, lychee, great egret and small motley woodpecker. Also nicknamed "Romania's Balaton", it was part of the small Prut delta in the outflow area.

The area became a legend in the time of Petru Rareş, who before becoming ruler of Moldova, was engaged in fishing on this lake. His carts supplied fish to both the Royal Court of Suceava and the fortresses of Tighina, Cetatea Albă and Chilia. The legends of the place say that Petru Rareş fell in love with a Tatar woman, and from here remained the series of names of the localities from Brateş to the north, which is a declaration of love: Tuluceşti, Tătarca, Frumusiţa.

The beach near Lake Brates is private, and access is within the available space. The price for adults is 10 RON / day, and for children 5 RON / day.
